Auckland University of Technology – WG Building

The Customer’s Requirement

As the infrastructure cabling installer at AUT WG, ITL Technologies in conjunction with a key supplier, TE Connectivity, were required to deliver a structured cabling solution for the Sir Paul Reeves Building. The design had to incorporate a solution that would cater for the high bandwidth requirements for a media intensive facility and be capable of transmitting Live HD Signals to the desk top or work station.

MORE INFO

With a multitude of network infrastructure design choices today, IT managers are constantly faced with the challenge of how to optimise their data communication requirements.

As well as traditional data transfer functions, new IP reliant applications such as VoIP, video streaming, live feeds and surveillance systems for the campus and office environments are continuously emerging. Consequently, faster and more reliable infrastructures are required to ensure that critical applications and return on investments are optimized and future proofed.

These challenges were evident for the design of communications network for the Sir Paul Reeves Building, given that along with the day to day functionality of the communications infrastructure, the design had to incorporate a solution that would cater for the high bandwidth requirements for a media intensive facility and be capable of transmitting Live HD Signals to the desk top or work station, with data transmission requirements in excess of 3GBit/s.

The Customer’s Solution

As the infrastructure designer for this project, technology consultants Division 27 Ltd identified that to support these media intensive applications and the convergence of IP systems a robust network capable of supporting 10GBit/s data transmission speeds was required, operating costs needed to be kept low and the network as high quality and as scalable as possible, as such a Class EA structured cabling system was employed.

Detailed Solution Breakdown:

Through the tender process the project elected to engage ITL Technologies to implement a TE Connectivity AMP NETCONNECT Category 6a Shielded Solution.

By deploying the shielded cabling solution not only does it cater for the requirements of the design but also suppresses the electromagnetic interference, and was not prone to the failures that plagued some types of structured cabling solutions.
